Facing Fears

Facing Fears

Step out of your cave of fears. All the answers you seek are right outside it.

Fear is a funny old thing, isn't it? Fear is the word we use to describe our emotional reaction to something that seems dangerous, but can also name something a person feels afraid of. An amount of fear is completely normal, as it helps us avoid dangerous situations and helps us make safer choices; however, it can also hold us back from doing many things in life.

"Fear is the number one obstacle you will face in life: the most difficult challenge you will ever be put to and the most important one to overcome" – Adam Smith.

Different people are afraid of different things; for example, you may be fearful of flying, whereas your partner loves it, but they may fear spiders, but spiders don't bother you. Everyone's perception of fear and how they react to it is different.

People can also fear other, more ordinary, and everyday things, like public speaking, fear of being hurt, fear of rejection, fear of failure, fear of inadequacy, fear of missing out, fear of change, and so much more.

Fear can hold us back from doing many things in life, so facing your fears and getting over them is essential. Facing your fears helps you to grow, as, after all, if you don't face your fears and work to overcome them, you'll never be able to move past where you are, and you'll remain stuck in the same situation forever.

When you face your fears, you'll often see there is nothing to be afraid of. Often fears are our mind's way of keeping us within the so called ‘comfort zone’ and in a place where we deceivingly feel safe and secure. When you avoid doing things you are fearful of, you teach the fear centre in your brain – known as the amygdala – that you can't handle these situations.

When we go through the process of facing our fears, we show our brain's fear centre that we can and will cope with these environments and that we can become accustomed to the thing we previously were afraid of. This is a healthy way of facing and overcoming concerns; however, this may not be possible for everyone if they have deep-rooted fears and need support to overcome them.

You don't need to keep running from things you're afraid of. It is possible to overcome your fears and eliminate them so they no longer hold you back.
